Close to Home
It is possible to have cultural experiences close to home. Yesterday we rode our bikes town to the RV resort to witness the landing of nearly 50 Native canoes. Indians from all of the tribes on the Puget Sound join together for a trek to Lummi Island. Anacortes was a stop on the way this year. Each canoe must ask the local tribal elders (Samish) for permission to land. Then they hauled the canoes on shore (no easy task). There was a huge salmon feed and then dancing at the high school track. We didn't stay for all of that. This morning it was fun to watch them paddle by our island on the way to Lummi.
