Home in Tucson
We arrived Tuesday afternoon—in time for a street party. Our new manager is a performer. Unlike our new Lacey life, people tend to gather in the streets to visit. We have met and greeted some of the people we know. Our poor house is being eaten alive by an alien cactus.

Long desert day
No photos. Just driving. Lots of nothing to report some freewAy. More 2 lane roads with trucks. Stopped in Blythe. Same motel where we once stayed across from
Sizzler steak. In our youth in Roseburg the Monday night special steak and baked potato was $1.29. Now is $12.99

395
Hwy 395 east of Sierras is a fAvorite road to drive. Super smooth and scenic. Little traffic. Plenty of rest stops and attractions. We didn't
make so many miles today. Stopped at Visitor Center at Mono Lake and also a stop at Manzanar before we stopped for night in Lone Pine. Our 3rd Best Western. Perhaps enough. Had fine dinner in town which cost more than motel. I had trout (plus onion soup and crepe brûlée). Kit had Elk from New Zealand.

Tule Lake site
Easy riding
Was 20 degrees when we loaded bikes this am. Got considerably warmer by afternoon. I drove a little bit mostly Kit did. Smooth roads and not much traffic. Also not much of anything including lunch spots. Luckily we had some crackers and cheese.
The most interesting thing was looking for the Japanese internment camp in Tule Lake. Found it off main road behind chain link. (See photo)
Luckily a National park employee came by and gave us info about the place. Only thing left is the former prison.
Made it to Reno. First hotel I chose was full so ended up at Best Western near airport.

Day 1
No ferry
We left at 8:45. No ferry to catch. Not only that but we were on the freeway in 5 minutes—And the easiest driving part of I5. It's like getting a 4 hour head start. Almost perfect driving day. Clear and cold and dry. But a lot of smoke hanging about all day. Can it all be from California?
Hit only a corner of Portland and turned up the gorge into the wind. 84 is so much more scenic than 5 through Oregon. At the Dalles we turned onto 197 — almost no traffic—almost views of the mountains through the smoke—nice rolling hills and views of the Deschutes River. 97 slips by Bend so you hardly know it is there. Lava and pine trees and here we are in LaPine. Easy to find our way around and only one major motel.
