3rd day: Merced to Ashland

Another too long day almost all of it on I5. FOG this morning didn't clear up until late morning and then the sun was fine. Saw no sign of snow going over the Siskyou's . The snow was quite high on Mt. Shasta which was gorgeous as always despite lack of low snow. 3 nights in 3 different brands of motels and everyone of them looks the same. Last night we had an in-house bistro (aka restaurant/bar) with amazing tomato soup. Tonight we are next door to a brewpub with too many beer choices.

2nd Day: Needles to Merced

A long day. We had a book on CD's as it was pretty boring. Kit got gas spilled on his feet at Love's in Tehachapi and we got stuck in a long traffic jam on 99 which wasn't quite the 45 minutes predicted. Otherwise pretty benign day. Stopped at a refurbished rest area which has got to be the nicest in CA and maybe in the country.

Travel Day North #1

Stressful enough this morning getting out of the house. Had to do laundry and loading and cleaning and etc—including a visit with Wanda next door. Finally on the road about 10:15. Thought it wasn't so far to Needles but ended up taking a lot longer what with the roundabout route and all the stops. Luckily we gained an extra hour.crossing into California. As it was we arrived about 4>30 Pacific time. Staying in a Best Western with trains running outside our window —quite frequently.

Heading Home Tomorrow

We've had a great time here at Far Horizons but it's time to go. It finally got warm enough for a last pool day. The pool was cool but I went in anyway. The hot tub is always nice. We are mostly packed and the car is partly loaded. Tomorrow morning we will do the laundry and final packing and loading. And take the leftover food to Dwayne and the house key to John. We don't plan on leaving much before 10 as we are only going as far as Needles and will gain an hour when we pass into CA. Decent weather forecast for tomorrow but looks like we will be heading for more cold.

In the NP

Yesterday we went on a hike on the easy trail at the National Park. I was going to have Kit take my pic by a saguaro skeleton but a hiker came along so I asked him to take us both and I ended up standing in front of the skeleton. Did 2 miles on semi rough trail. Ran into Carl who we knew from our volunteer days

Last warm(ish) outing

Went to Tohono Chul for lunch in the garden on Monday and a walkabout the grounds of this botanical garden . Not much growing but some sculptures like these tortoises. And some interesting conversations with docents and staff. Amazingly uncrowded.

Outings

On New Year's Day we went on an outing to Brandi Fenton Park to see the sculpture garden. Alas it was closed—though a small garden presided over by this butterfly was open. So we went to Reid Park to see the kids feeding the ducks and then to Rubios for lunch. (alas it was closed).

Yesterday we had a food outing—to the bakery, the bagel shop, and to Rubios (wonderful fish taco chain) for lunch. We miss the wonderful food spots of Tucson. Alas, our favorite BBQ place has closed permanently.
